Dairy for dogs
Many owners don’t find out that their dogs are lactose intolerant until they feed them milk or milk products. Lactose is a sugar found in milk and dairy products including yoghurts.
Many dogs are lactose intolerant, meaning they don’t produce enough lactase to properly digest lactose. When lactose-intolerant dogs consume dairy, it can lead to gastrointestinal upset, including symptoms like diarrhoea, stomach cramps and gas. Even in dogs that are not lactose intolerant, dairy can cause gastrointestinal upset due to the high fat content in some dairy products.
Dairy products, especially those with high-fat content, can increase the risk of pancreatitis in dogs. Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas and can be a serious and painful condition.
Nutritionally speaking, there is nothing in cow’s milk (or even other variations of milk) that is good for our dogs. Of course, as puppies, they will drink their mother’s milk, but after they have been weened, it is of no use to them anymore.
Many customers have been giving their dogs Greek Yoghurt for probiotic intake without knowing it doesn’t do any good for our dogs.
I highly recommend using coconut yoghurt instead. It’s a plant-based alternative and doesn’t have lactose. It’s easy to digest for our doggo’s and doesn’t cause any allergies.
